Support for LGBTQ+ Families is Essential

The current political climate for LGBTQ+ individuals is undeniably unsettling, with legislative attacks and rhetoric spreading fear and doubt. According to research from the UCLA Williams Institute, more than 2.5 million LGBTQ adults are parenting children under the age of 18. For these parents, the current atmosphere of fear and uncertainty adds an extra layer of anxiety—how do we protect, support, and empower our kids in a world that often feels hostile? There’s no step-by-step guide to navigating this journey, and the pressure to always say and do the right thing can feel overwhelming. Many parents struggle with the fear of making mistakes while wanting nothing more than to ensure their child feels loved, accepted, and safe. Parenting is never a solo endeavor, and raising confident, happy, and productive children requires collective wisdom and support.

That’s why community is essential. Since 2022, Sara LaWall and Jen Blair have been striving to create a more inclusive communities where children can thrive, knowing they are never alone. With their podcast, "In the Den with Mama Dragons," they have been walking and talking with other parents, caregivers, and experts through this journey of raising healthy, happy, and productive LGBTQ+ humans.

More Than Sex-Ed’s Director of Curriculum & Instruction, Emmalinda MacLean was a guest on this week's episode of the podcast which focused on queer-inclusive sex ed, and how it keeps ALL students safer.
